UiTM Cawangan Pulau Pinang continues to move forward in world-class research: a
delegation of researchers and students from the Faculty of Chemical Engineering,
UiTMCPP, carried out experiments at the Synchrotron Light Research Institute (SLRI),
Thailand, from 13 to 16 February 2026.

The experiments were led by Ir. Ts. Mohamed Syazwan Osman with five PhD and undergraduate
students, in collaboration with SLRI scientist Dr. Ratchadaporn Supruangnet. The
study used synchrotron X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) to examine the electronic
structure and surface properties of materials at the atomic scale.

Notably, this is the first group from UiTM Cawangan Pulau Pinang to carry out experiments
using an international synchrotron XPS facility, opening the way to high-impact
fundamental research in advanced materials and environmental catalysis.

The study focuses on Fe₃O₄/BiOI and BaTiO₃/BiOI heterostructure materials, which
have potential as new-generation catalysts for environmental applications such as
water treatment and pollutant degradation.

Taking part in these experiments also gave the students direct exposure to large-
scale, world-class research facilities, building their skills in advanced scientific
research and international collaboration.

This initiative reflects UiTM Cawangan Pulau Pinang's commitment to strengthening
global research networks and raising the university's visibility in materials science
and advanced technology.
